Teaching Innovation
During your time at the University of Edinburgh, you will be assigned a Director of Studies (DoS). Your DoS is normally a member of the teaching staff in the School and is there to help you along your degree path. Especially at the beginning, when students are trying to find their ways in the University and for their curricula, the DoS is a central figure who can provide guidance and assistance during your course.
In terms of teaching, the wide variety of interests of our academic staff as well as the range of activities run in the Department will ensure that students can maximise their experience. Thanks to a commitment to put the student at the centre of learning, teaching is offered in a variety of styles depending on the subject matter and the expertise of the academic staff. Furthermore the Department places itself at the cutting edge of innovation in teaching of Psychology with the continuous improvement of the courses enhanced by technological innovation and e-learning.
Teaching and assessment methods
A variety of teaching methods are used: lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical classes, project work and computer-based exercises (e.g. in research methods and statistics). Carrying out your own experiments and research projects, writing scientific reports, and presenting your research to fellow students and staff in seminars are important aspects of studying Psychology. First, second and third year courses therefore contain an important practical component. All fourth year students carry out a research project on a topic of their choosing and write a 11,000 word dissertation on it.
First and second year work is assessed through a combination of coursework (essays and practical reports) and examinations. Entry to honours is decided at the end of second year on the basis of performance in coursework and examinations. Final honours degrees are awarded on the basis of third and fourth year examinations and continuous assessment.
