Library Access and General Information
Access & Opening Hours
- The Library is staffed full-time during semester Monday to Friday 9am to 1pm, 2pm to 5pm.
- All University readers may visit the Library or borrow books when the library is staffed. Enquiries or requests for books outwith staffing hours can be made by email and will be answered promptly when the librarian is next working.
- Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences (PPLS) staff, postgraduates, 3rd and 4th year undergraduates may also use the Library when it is not staffed (including weekends) until 10pm . (Students should leave the building at 9.30pm in time for the gates being closed at 10pm).
- Access to the Library and 7, George Square outside normal office hours is by matriculation/staff card and accompanying security pin number. This number can be found on the 'My stuff' tab in MyEd.
- External readers may use the library on production of an appropriate card obtained from the University's Main Library Help Desk. We regret that external readers may not borrow items from the Reserve section.

All new readers should register with the librarian on
first visiting the library.
Borrowing Rules
- Books which are on course reading lists and off-prints or photocopies are held in the Reserve Section. This is located in the Librarian's office and items are for short-loan.
- There are two short loan periods - 9am to 4pm during the day or overnight from 4pm to 10am the following day. Books borrowed on Friday afternoons may be borrowed until the following Monday morning.
- Short loan books may be reserved for up to 4 days in advance using the reservation sheets provided outside the Library Office.
- Books on the open shelves must be signed for but may be borrowed for a longer period. Ask the Librarian for further information.
- All print journals are for reference use only.
Dissertations
Undergraduate final honours year dissertations for Psychology dating from 1947 are held in the Library. They are available on request from the Librarian. A card index for older undergraduate dissertations is available in the Library.
- Dissertations are not publicly available until one academic year after their original submission. Since 2008 dissertations are available as full-text documents online in the Edinburgh Research Archive (ERA).

Postgraduate dissertations
PhD theses are held in the Special Collections Department of Edinburgh University Main Library. Those submitted after 1984 can be found on the University Library Catalogue.
Postgraduate MSC dissertations from 1998-2004 are held in the Psychology & Philosophy Library. They are available on request from the Librarian. MSC Dissertations 1998-2004. (PDF)
Dissertations are not available publicly until one academic year after their original submission. Dissertations submitted electronically from 2006 onwards are held online in the Edinburgh Research Archive (ERA).
Past Exam Papers
There are files of Psychology , Philosophy and LEL past Honours exam papers in Room G2. They are also available in Main Library (shelved at Per .37 Uni) and online at Exam Papers Online.
Catalogues & Literature Searches
- Psychology and Philosophy Library books should appear on the Edinburgh University Library Catalogue. There are also card catalogues in G1 which contain all stock held in the Psychology & Philosophy Library, including those older items which may occasionally be excluded from the online catalogue.
- Reserve items are indicated by (Reserve) on the online catalogue or an "R" in the card catalogue.
- When the Haldane Library was moved to 7 George Square in 2002 a number of books were withdrawn and sent to Main Library. The catalogue has been updated but if readers are aware of any anomalies in the catalogue please let the Librarian know.

- Information on useful databases such as JSTOR, PsycINFO, Medline or Web of Knowledge is available in the Library or at Doing a Literature Search.
